Facebook starts verifying popular accounts
Facebook will allow a small number of public figures to verify their accounts beginning today, a spokesperson from the company confirms. Users with verified accounts will appear more often in “People To Subscribe To” recommendations on the site, but unlike on Twitter and Google+, there will be no visual indication that a profile is official. These users will also have the option to display their more well-known pseudonyms, if applicable

Facebook gaining edge with journalists using subscribe
Facebook’s heavy push of the subscribe feature has apparently paid off as thousands of journalists enabled subscribers after its launch in September, according to a note on the Journalists + Facebook page . The social network’s outreach among public figures and the prominence it gives subscribe suggestions on the site show a level of commitment to taking away some of Twitter’s power and preventing Google+ from gaining traction as a source for news

Facebook Focuses on Speed For Its Latest Android App Update
In trying to bring its iOS and Android experiences to parity, Facebook is overhauling its smartphone app on Google’s platform today by bringing the left-hand menu design it introduced to the iOS app two months ago. Instead of the grid-based design, where users have to return to the main menu to switch between features like photos and the news feed, a menu will sweep in on the left-hand side containing quick links to events, messages, photos and more. Messages are now in the top bar for quick access. Facebook also doubled the speed for accessing photos and alum in the app. They made it faster to share photos, view comments and edit captions.

Study: Auto-Posting to Facebook Decreases Likes and Comments by 70%
Facebook Pages that automatically publish content to the news feed through third-party apps such as HootSuite, TweetDeck, and NetworkedBlogs receive an average of 70% less Likes and comments on their posts per fan, according to a new study by Applum, developer of Page tool EdgeRank Checker. The study says the difference is likely due to Facebook reducing the prominence of posts published by third-party APIs, and Facebook collapsing updates from the same API from across a user’s friends and Liked Pages. As Likes and comments increase a post’s prominence in the news feed, driving more impressions and clicks, all Pages using auto-posting apps should look to switch to manual posting if possible.

Facebook’s Unreleased Mobile Photos App: How We Think It Works
A large set of documents and images of an as yet unreleased Facebook mobile photos app was leaked yesterday. Many details remain unclear, including whether the app will be part of the traditional mobile apps, a standalone app, or both. The app cherry picks some of the best design and functionality from existing photo apps Instagram , PicPlz , Path , With , and Color , and combines them with new features and a low-friction sharing process. Facebook didn’t directly acknowledge the app’s existence, except to say, “We’re constantly working on new features and enhancements to our products but have nothing new to announce at this time.” We’ve dug through all the available images leaked to Techcrunch and here’s how we think the new mobile photos app will work, though nothing is for certain until the app actually launches — if it does.
